Why are grapes harmful to dogs?

The harmless looking grapes are one of the human foods that must not be given to dogs. No one really knows why dogs should not be allowed to eat these red, green and black sweet fruits. The studies conducted verified that the toxicity of grapes to canines is not due to fertilizers and pesticides used. However, the studies have established that grapes can cause renal failure in dogs. This is a very serious condition as the pet would not only suffer from severe pain but the pet may also expire if no immediate treatment is administered.

People love to eat grapes and raisins – and why not, grapes are delicious and contains loads of nutrients and vitamins. Grapes have significant amounts of antioxidants. Free radicals commonly known as oxidants are the cells “developed” from humans unhealthy living . Oxidants owe their existence to unhealthy food, alcohol, pollution and exposure to harmful rays of the sun. These oxidants are the reasons why people suffer from various health conditions like cancer, heart diseases, arthritis and many other health concerns.

Grapes are good sources of antioxidants that prevent the oxidants from causing more harm to the healthy cells of the body. People may not be aware of the antioxidants in grapes but these fruits will still be consumed for its sweet lusciousness. Of course, weight watchers would favor this fruit as even if significant amount is consumed, no difference will be made on the waistline.

Grapes toxic effects on canines is a recent discovery. Because of the pet owner’s tendency to share whatever is eaten with the pet, but the dog that has ingested grapes may not manifest the signs of grapes toxicity. The toxic effects of grapes has puzzled dog owners and scientists as not all dogs are affected by this fruit. Some dogs would consume significant amount without being affected while other dogs that has consumed a few pieces of the fruit would manifest signs of poisoning. The toxic effect of grapes, unlike that of chocolates is not dose dependent.

Once the toxic effects of grapes affect the dog, a change in behavior will be noticed at once. From being extremely hyperactive, the dog will be sluggish and depressed. Diarrhea and vomiting are signs that the dog was poisoned. A dog affected by the toxins found in grapes would need immediate medical treatment. This kind of toxicity will cause renal failure as the toxins will prevent the kidney from functioning
