How to cure the dog’s upset stomach?

Dogs are not only voracious eaters, these animals are also indiscriminate eaters so that if they have ingested food and non-food items that do not agree with their system, they would suffer from an upset stomach. Dogs would eat not only spoiled food and rotting things but non-food items as well. In spite of being well fed, dogs would appear to be always hungry thus anything that catch their fancy would be ingested.

There are several reasons why dogs would have an upset stomach. An upset stomach is commonly blamed on the dog’s dietary indiscretion but this gastro intestinal concern common in dogs with sensitive stomach. In some dogs, stomach upset can simply be the result of a change in diet or it can also be a symptom of an existing but undiagnosed medical concern the results to a weak immune system.

As stomach upset is a common concern, taking the dog to a vet may not be necessary. The dog’s stomach upset can be resolved with home remedies and in a day or two the pet will be its usual self. The vomiting, diarrhea and passing gas will not be new to a pet owner accustomed to dealing with the upset stomach of the dog.

Due to the discomfort in the stomach area, the dog would be less energetic and would even seem to be lethargic. Dog owners would know that the pet would never pass up the chance to eat. However, the pain in the belly would cause a dog to turn away from food . Stomach upset normally do not require medical attention but if the vomit and stool are bloody, the pet must have medical attention at once. Bloody vomit and diarrhea can be a symptom of a more serious concern.

Resting the stomach is the most common home remedy for upset stomach. Food is withheld for 24 hours in older dogs. Younger dogs may be allowed to have small amounts of easy to digest food. These measures will give the stomach a chance to rest. Dehydration is a serious concern that can results from diarrhea and vomiting thus the pet must be encouraged to drink. Drinking may exacerbate the abdominal pain thus the dog would refuse to drink. Sufficient water intake is necessary to prevent dehydration. Ice cubes will be more interesting thus the dog will be encouraged to replenish lost fluids. Easy to digest food can be given to the pet after the fasting period.
