American Foxhound – A Versatile Dog Breed

An American Foxhound’s appearance is very similar to that of a Beagle. An American Foxhound’s height is between 21 and 25 inches and the weight ranges from 65 to 75 pounds. The streamlined athletic body is thickly covered with a short fur that ranges in color from tan and white, red and white and the impressive combination of black, tan and white. Well boned, straight and long legs give this breed its legendary speed.

The American Foxhound is believed to be in existence in the Crown Colony – long before it was given the name America. This breed originated from the English dogs that were brought to the New World in 1650 by Robert Brooke.

In its country of origin, these dogs were acclaimed for being excellent hunters. These dogs are favorite hunting companions of the British landed gentry. Hunted in packs, the dogs will chase the prey while the hunters follow on horseback. The deep and booming melodious voice will distinctly change to alert the hunters when a prey is found. New World settlers utilize the dog in the same manner. However, because of the ferocious tenacious nature, it was rumored that the dogs were utilized by the English military commanders to track and hunt Indians.

The crossing between English Hounds and the dogs of Irish and French settlers resulted to the development of a new breed – the American Foxhound. The American Foxhound, a versatile breed of dog was born.

The American Foxhound, first and foremost is a hunting dog. An American Foxhound would be in its element if it is chasing a prey. An ultra sensitive scenting ability, a remarkable staying power and a passionate desire to overpower a prey make this breed a notable hunter. An American Foxhound that has found an interesting scent will not let anything or anybody to stand in its way to bag the prey. As the breed name suggests, foxes are the usual prey of these dogs although these hunting dogs will not pass up the chance to run after any animal.That the dog will be highly valued by hunter is a given fact.

American Foxhounds are acclaimed for their intense hunting drives. Although the dogs exhibit a courageous and tenacious temperament when hunting, American Foxhounds have a sweet and gentle personality. These energetic dogs turn into placid pets with gentle disposition at home. An American Foxhound gives its loyalty and friendship not only to one person. These hunting dogs form a strong bond with the family but these dogs are noted to bond closely with the children.
